Sri Lanka's death toll much higher, groups say
Organizations claim far more Tamil civilians died in battle's last days than government admits
May 30, 2009 04:30 AM
FOREIGN AFFAIRS REPORTER
Days after a call for an investigation into alleged human rights abuses in Sri Lanka's northeastern war zone was defeated by the UN Human Rights Council, reports persist of escalating casualty figures among Tamil civilians.
The latest, from the Times of London,
alleges that "more than 20,000 Tamil civilians were killed in the final throes of the Sri Lankan civil war, most as a result of government shelling," during an operation to crush the Tamil Tiger rebels.
The report, based on an estimate from a Roman Catholic priest who fled the "no-fire" zone, unnamed expert sources, and analysis of aerial photographs, was fiercely denied by the Sri Lankan government.
Sri Lankan national security official Laksham Hullegalle called the images published by the newspaper "totally unbelievable," and told the BBC the government had done no heavy shelling in a "no-fire" zone since it announced an official halt to attacks with heavy weapons on April 27. The video showed an aerial view of a devastated area "the size of a large football stadium," where it said Tamil civilians had been trapped for weeks under bombardment. But it also showed images that suggested the Tigers had military positions in the middle of camps for displaced people, drawing fire from Sri Lankan forces.
In Geneva, a spokesman for UN human rights high commissioner Navi Pillay said that the door was not closed to an inquiry into rights violations, and human rights groups urged a probe into the actions of both sides.
Many back claims that Tamil civilian casualties are far higher than the 7,000 estimated earlier by the UN. "Those UN numbers were only partial," said Anna Neistat, an emergency researcher for Human Rights Watch who closely monitored the situation during the final battles in which the government declared victory over the rebels. "Given the scale of attacks we are aware of and the kind of weapons used, as well as the density in that area, the casualties must be significantly higher."
The government's early estimates of only 10,000 to 15,000 people in the area where fighting was taking place escalated to more than 50,000 when its forces broke through Tamil Tiger lines and more than 100,000 people poured into camps. "Based on satellite imagery we now know how densely populated the area was," said Neistat, who was in a camp for displaced Tamils in February and followed the situation through local and international contacts after leaving the country. "Every single attack would have resulted in civilian casualties."
Most humanitarian groups, and journalists, are barred from the conflict zone. But groups able to deliver aid to the camps which now house close to 300,000 Tamils, speak of urgent, escalating needs as the last war refugees arrive.
The World Food Program fears a shortfall, and is calling for additional funds to meet nutritional needs. Meanwhile, Toronto-based GlobalMedic is preparing to open a second portable hospital in the camps to accommodate sick and wounded new arrivals. "We're averaging 1,300 patients a day, and we're expecting to take even more when the new hospital opens," said the group's spokesman, Rahul Singh.
The reports of casualties have sparked renewed calls for an investigation of human rights violations.
"The defeat of the UN Human Rights Council resolution is a victory for power politics," said Sharryn Aiken, a law professor at Queen's University and co-founder of Canadian Academics for Tamil Rights. "It did not vindicate the Sri Lankan government, but showed a flaw in the process."

Mahinda’s accounts crime
[TamilNet, Monday, 18 May 2009, 07:33 GMT]
Before his murderous assault on the so-called safety zone, Mahinda Rajapaksa has always been maintaining that the number of civilians there was only 70,000. But after the first bout of the capture of civilians last month, until Thursday, 247,908 civilians from the safety zone were registered in the internment camps of Vavuniyaa, Pulmoaddai, Mannaar and Jaffna. After the first bout, the Sri Lanka president was saying that only 15 to 20 thousand were remaining in the safety zone. Sunday evening Colombo’s militarised civil administration head of internment camps, Chandrasiri admitted more than 80,000 crossing after the latest onslaught. According to aid officials, some more thousands are still remaining.

The figures admitted now, added with the dead, disappeared and those who have given the slip to the SLA, crosses well over 350, 000.

Ever since the beginning of the creation of the so-called safety zone, TamilNet has been reporting a figure of 360,000, based on local official records and the accounts of its own independent correspondent. It has always been quoting a modest a figure of over 300,000.

But the world bodies and the so-called international media were neither prepared to believe accounts coming from what was labelled by them as ‘pro-LTTE website’, nor had their own accounts correct, even by counting from the sky.

By quoting very low figures, Rajapaksa’s aim was to minimise the food and medicine supply in order to starve the civilians for a prolonged time. Starvation was a crucial weapon and a serious war crime deployed by Colombo to capture and incarcerate civilians claimed by it as its own citizens. Mahinda Rajapaksa will now be using the actual number to get aid money.

The Indian Establishment has gone on record in openly abetting Colombo in this war crime by endorsing the number 70,000, quoted by Colombo.

The UN also to a large extent abetted the war crime by officially quoting a figure far less than the actual number. The UN estimated only 200,000 civilians in the beginning, roughly 50 percent of the actual number. In the later stage it quoted 50,000, again less than half of the actual number, while TamilNet quoted 120,000, based on the accounts of its correspondent.

Perhaps typical of its approach to the crisis by equating the attacked and the attackers, the UN was balancing the figures also. Its failure in both will go into history.

Tamil circles fear that such accounts crimes are likely to be committed in future also when it comes to the dead, disappeared and to several other matters affecting the oppressed further.

The international community is fully responsible for this accounts crime, by allowing Colombo to wage the war without any witnesses, but how to indict them, the Tamil circles ask.

The freedom figter's (LTTE) is yet to confirm, untill the time Don't Belive the rumors!

Colombo 'ended' the battle with a massacre
[TamilNet, Monday, 18 May 2009, 07:25 GMT]
Monday early hours around 3:00 a.m. Vanni local time, the LTTE Political Chief B. Nadesan and LTTE Peace Secretariat Director S. Puleedevan telephoned their contacts in Europe and informed them to tell the ICRC Head Office that only around 1,000 wounded cadres, civil officials of the LTTE and civilians remained in the so-called safety zone and there was no firing from the LTTE side. They urged the ICRC to evacuate the wounded. A few hours later, Colombo's Defence Ministry website claimed finding the dead bodies of Mr. Nadesan, Mr. Puleedevan, Mr. Ilango (Tamileelam Police Chief), and LTTE Leader V. Pirapaharan's son Mr. Charles Antony. The LTTE is yet to confirm, but initial reports indicate a determined massacre by the Sri Lanka Army (SLA).

On Sunday, SLA Commander Lt. Gen. Sarath Fonseka told AFP that he will not allow the LTTE to 'regroup' and will ensure that there is 'no future' for the Tigers.

He also said that "the firm decision of the political hierarchy not to go for talks with the LTTE terrorists until they lay down arms had contributed significantly to all these war victories."

During the last week both Nadesan and LTTE's International Relations Head S. Pathmanathan were welcoming the call by the US President Barack Obama and were expressing the willingness of the LTTE to heed his request.

However, Colombo has decided not to allow any opportunity for the LTTE to negotiate and to annihilate its leadership.

Both Obama's call and the LTTE's favourable response were not honoured by Colombo.
SLA spree of massacre in Mu'l'li-vaaykkaal
[TamilNet, Monday, 18 May 2009, 07:43 GMT]
In a spree of massacre, the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) is killing the wounded civilians in large numbers in the so-called safety zone, according to a reliable telephone call from Mu'l'li-vaaykkaal Monday forenoon. There are still civilians hiding in the bunkers the phone call said.

None of the international agencies, insistently advocating the evacuation of civilians, were present at the scene, either to monitor or to remedy the catastrophe.

TamilNet doesn't have any communication with its independent correspondents in the field on the current situation.

'Long live human dignity; shame on international community'

Pleas, Don't believe the rumors. This is an Interview with Tamil freedom fighter Spokesman.

'Long live human dignity; shame on international community'
[TamilNet, Sunday, 17 May 2009, 18:37 GMT]
While the so-called international community is "exposed of its shameful conning," thousands of Tamil civilians and combatants are laying down their lives to "uphold Tamil dignity, and human dignity," says a Tamil academic in Colombo. Those who blame the LTTE for bringing in the disaster know well that Colombo always had the option to negotiate or to come out with a political solution convincing Tamils not to continue the conflict. But Colombo’s aim is not power sharing but genocide and subjugation of Tamils by forcing war on them. "The only way now for the IC to come out of the colossus shame is direct intervention and recognition of the justification for Tamil Eelam," the academic said.

Further comments from the academic:

"Mahinda Rajapaksa’s untruthfulness to the world on the use of heavy weapons, the number of Tamil civilians involved in the tragedy and the number of them get killed are too well known. Yet the IC shamefully allows them, allows the imprisonment and inhuman humiliation of civilians and in future plans to leave everything in the hands of Colombo.

"Tamils don’t expect any sense of shame or any justice coming either from Colombo or New Delhi, the partners of the war. The world knows Sonia’s statement a week ago that the war was over by the efforts of her government and Pranab Mukherjee’s statement a couple of months back, putting the number of civilians at 70,000. They will never be bothered about shame.

"China, Russia and Vietnam, by sitting on UN, act on behalf of Colombo and New Delhi, to prevent international action and to keep the Tamil question to rot at the backyard of the war partners. The Indian Establishment is particularly adamant in preventing all international efforts. It could have acted long back had it really cared for its natural allies in the island and even now it doesn’t need any ‘invitation’ from any one, if it wants to do any justice to Tamils. It has to only come out of its ‘bias’.

"But the Co- Chairs and especially the US among them, which is directly involved in the crisis by setting its course diplomatically, has undeniable responsibility. What is the effect or credibility of the recent White House statements is a question widely asked in the Tamil circles now.

"Colombo has neither stopped war nor stopped using heavy weapons and there was no UN to receive the injured and the captured civilians. Only the LTTE responded to the White House statement.

"Caring for Colombo’s meaningless sovereignty and waiting for unwilling India’s consent will bring in only disastrous effects on the credibility of the West and on the reliability of the global order it envisages.

"It is clear that the LTTE is prepared to meet the White House demands within the means of Tamil dignity and if the US statements are going to mean only a conning, they are prepared to die fighting but not without upholding Tamil dignity.

"The ball is in the court of the White House.

"With the dignity and self-respect upheld, the Tamils can always rebuild their struggle. But the shameful ones will never find credibility again."

Soosai's message to media from vanni 17.05.09 Noon

25,000 civilians injured to death while IC watches: Soosai
[TamilNet, Sunday, 17 May 2009, 09:14 GMT]
Sea Tiger Special Commander of the LTTE, Col. Soosai Sunday noon said that around 25,000 civilians injured in the artillery attack of Sri Lanka Army are dead and dying now without receiving medical attention. The LTTE has repeatedly requested the ICRC through Mr. Pathmanathan to evacuate the injured through Vadduvaakal or Iraddaivaaikkaal, but there was no IC response. Within a 2 square kilometre area, there are dead bodies everywhere while the remaining thousands are in bunkers amidst the use of every kind of weapon by Colombo's forces. The SLA is not even allowing the people to flee but prefers to fire at them, Soosai said.

The IC has not cared for what is happening. Many more thousands in addition to the 25,000 are being injured and killed now. Acting at least now can save them. We continue to defend, as there are signs of rescue, he further said.

Meanwhile, latest reports from Vanni indicate that several thousands of civilians have been captured by the SLA, but only after first firing at them at random, causing the death and injury of many.

LTTE's head of international relations S. Pathmanathan in a statement Sunday, following an hour after Soosai's message, said the LTTE is prepared to silence its guns if that is what needed by the IC to save the life and dignity of the Tamil people.

Who gave the Power to do this tamil Genocide to the Sri Lankan Government?

Who gave the Power to do this Tamil Genocide to the SRILANKAN ARMY?
Over the past several years the countries like the USA, the great Britain, Canada and European union and some other countries like India, China and Russia have declared The Freedom fighters of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) as a ” Terrorist” Organization.

Recently in 2006 the Canadian government (Stefan capper government) Banned the Tamil Organization (Tamil Tigers or ” Terrorist” Organization or Freedom fighters Organization, What ever you want to call is according to your believe. But strongly we know that they are our freedom fighters and Our National Leader is Prabaharan.V).

First of all could please you tell me what is the definition for Terrorism is?
There is more than 100’s of definition for terrorism. There is no universally accepted definition of terrorism. It remains the subject of continuing debate in international bodies. If we start to argue about it, It is never going to come to the end.

Between the love and friendship there is a thinner line. Also between the freedom fight struggle activities and terrorist activities there is also a thinner line. Unfortunately, Our Freedom fighters of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) are also declared by “The international Community “ as a ” Terrorist” Organization according to their point of view.

In our view past history will tell the truth … First in 1915 the Sri Lankan Sinhalese they start to do activities against to the Tamil minority community . So If we start to go look at it… the pages and the time also not in off now.

We know the truth, not only by the reason, but also by the heart by our past experience in our homeland… That’s why we are here as a refuge.
“One often hears, for example, that ''one man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter”
It is a Quote about the terrorism.

We came as a refugees … now we are living with permanent residency, or we are caring or holding the Canadian citizen ship with a proud and we are thank full to Canada and to the honest full Canadians. We would like to be good Canadian citizen.
But the current situation in our country, The Sri Lankan Government Keep killing our relatives and our friends… our people … with international communities help it is affecting our life in Canada also. We couldn’t eat , we couldn’t sleep …And our peace full life in out of Sri Lanka also emotionally and mentally start to affected by Sri Lankan Government and their military and their slaughterer activities against to the innocent Tamil civilians.
So past 5 months we are keep asking to stop The genocide … And we are still asking and seeking for a good response from the international governments…

“The water in a vessel is sparkling; the water in the sea is dark. The small truth has words which are clear; the great truth has great silence.” - Rabindranath Tagore quote
The fish in the water is silent, the animals on the earth is noisy, the bird in the air is singing. But man has in him the silence of the sea, the noise of the earth and the music of the air.”
We are also human being We are trying to bring out the pain full truth. We are seeking attention of the good people hearts. We are seeking for the real human rights. We are seeking for the justice.. That’s why we are on the street around the world …. We are making noise to listen the world to the realty. But , Money and politics are playing … The international community is trying to cover there historical mistakes they are trying to cover the absolute truth.

The International community can’t accommodate. When the Sri Lankan Government and their military are the slaughter of innocent people to advance a so-called political cause, at that point the political cause becomes immoral and unjust and they should be eliminated from any serious discussion, any serious debate. Latterly some of the international community willing to do this serious decision .
At this point I want to say thank you to the truthful medias like channel 4. Because, They start to dig out the truth.
“Thousand hands can try to cover the sun. But sun is not going to disappear. “

How ever The international community, who claim the Tamil freedom fighters are terrorist and who made the banned decision on it not directly but indirectly they give the green signal to do this Tamil Genocide.
The international now has to act with fairness and openness and should take full responsibility for the people who are being targeted with no mercy or dignity,"
We don’t like to disturb any standard Canadians citizens life… Sorry to say it we are keep doing protest on the street , Because we are seeking your help also Please understand our situation… And Please give a voice to stop the genocide. And help to us to protect our Tamil community who are living in north and east (Tamils Homeland) of Sri Lanka .
We can't accommodate terrorism. When someone uses the slaughter of innocent people to advance a so-called political cause, at that point the political cause becomes immoral and unjust and they should be eliminated from any serious discussion, any serious debate.
“Clouds are not powerful than the sun. A larger cloud could temporarily block the sun, but not forever. The sun will rise stronger and brighter again. Similarly a good men’s success cannot be blocked by anyone with bad intentions.”

Once Nelson Mandela was in jail for many years and he was called a “Terrorist”. But now he is a national leader. The history will repeat.

Crime scenes at Sri Lankan camps

Grim scenes at Sri Lankan camps

Updated on 05 May 2009

By Nick Paton Walsh

Channel 4 News reports from a camp in the northern Sri Lankan city of Vavuniya, where Tamil refugees have been taken.

Shocking claims have emerged of shortages of food and water, dead bodies left where they have fallen, women separated from their families, and even sexual abuse.

This programme obtained the first independently filmed pictures from the internment camps set up by the Sri Lankan government to house Tamils who have fled the country's civil war.

'Sri Lankan army hits hospital'
Updated on 02 May 2009
By Nick Paton Walsh

Doctors say Sri Lankan army shells a hospital in the safe zone killing scores of civilian patients. Nick Paton Walsh reports. The Sri Lankan army knows exactly where the no-fire safe zone is, and it knows exactly where the hospital is in that zone.

And yet doctors say the Sri Lankan army shelled that hospital killing nearly a hundred civilians and patients. Their report is confirmed by a diplomatic source.

The official said the Sri Lankan army had killed 64 patients, their relatives and other bystanders today, following the bombing of the makeshift hospital in the northeast of the country, in the tiny so-called safe zone.

It brings the death toll at the hospital to 91 in the last two days.

The hospital is in Mullivaikal, in the south of the coastal strip, still held by separatist Tamil Tigers.

Troops are advancing from the north, but the military hotly denies the attack.
There are some distressing images in this report.

May 05, Colombo: Canadian government yesterday announced $3 million in emergency humanitarian aid to Sri Lanka.

Canada's International Co-operation Minister Beverley Oda pledged this aid package after the meeting with Sri Lanka Foreign Minister Rohitha Bogollagama.

The money will help the Red Cross and Doctors Without Borders provide food, medicine and shelter for internally displaced people in the North.

During the meeting, Sri Lanka rejected the Canadian call for a ceasefire with the Tiger rebels.

Tamil protesters plan human chain in Toronto

Tens of thousands are expected to participate to urge Ottawa to press for a ceasefire in Sri Lanka

Days after police dispersed their blockade of University Avenue, Tamil protesters are organizing a human chain that will wind its way through downtown Toronto this afternoon.

The protesters have pledged not to block the roadways, and a police spokesperson said that only minimal delays to downtown traffic are expected.

The chain will be the third this year, and the first since thousands of Tamil protesters clogged the streets outside the U.S. consulate for nearly five days, stopping traffic along University Avenue.

"They made their point last week with the five-day demonstration, which tied up traffic in the downtown area, and I think they need to think about overdoing the demonstration business," said councillor Case Ootes (Ward 29, Toronto-Danforth). "But as long as it doesn't interfere with others and the rights of others, then fine."

Organizers are expecting tens of thousands of people to participate in the chain, which will begin at Union Station and stretch north along Yonge Street.

"The people will be coming out in large numbers believing that the Canadian government will take action," said Senthan Nada, a spokesperson for the Coalition to Stop the War in Sri Lanka.

Two human chains formed in January and March to protest against the civil war in Sri Lanka disrupted traffic periodically. The protest in January drew more than 40,000 people, and the sheer size of the crowd required that parts of Front Street be closed.

Since 1983, a civil war between the separatist Tamil Tigers and the Sri Lankan army has claimed 70,000 lives. Violence in the country escalated recently, and the UN has estimated that 6,500 people have been killed in the fighting since late January.

The human chains and blockade outside the U.S. consulate have aimed to draw attention to the escalating conflict and to encourage Canadian and U.S. leaders to press the government of Sri Lanka to stop the fighting.

Yesterday, the Sri Lankan government rebuffed Canada's calls for a ceasefire and appeared set to press ahead with its military offensive to wipe out the Tamil Tigers, giving no sign in meetings with Canada's International Cooperation Minister, Bev Oda, that it will pause the fight.

Ms. Oda met with Sri Lanka's President and Foreign Affairs minister yesterday in the Sri Lankan capital of Colombo, calling for a ceasefire and "full and unhindered" access for aid workers to the tiny "no-fire" zone, where 50,000 civilians are trapped alongside Tiger rebels.

But she emerged believing that Sri Lanka's government fully intends to ignore the world's appeals and try to defeat the Tigers decisively.

"They listened to it politely. They weren't willing to comment on the ceasefire request," she told Canadian reporters in a conference call.

Mr. Nada said Canadian Tamils are grateful for Ms. Oda's efforts, but that more needs to be done.

"It's really hard for Tamils to digest the fact that Canada hasn't taken a strong stance toward bringing an end to this war, and Canada hasn't addressed the Canadian Tamil citizens' grievances," he said.   Source: http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/story/LAC.20090505.TAMILS05OTTART2227/TPStory /National
